STUVA

STUVA is an independent, non-profit research institution. It was founded in 1960 and today has approximately 220 corporative members today. For the processing of contracts from private clients, STUVAtec - Studiengesellschaft für unterirdische Verkehrsanlagen mbH (Research Association for Underground Transportation Facilities Ltd.) was set up separately in 1996 as 100% daughter of STUVA. Our fields of activities include fundamental research and special analyses, focusing mainly on the areas of underground construction, railway and road transport. Owing to their wide-ranging experience and knowledge gained from many years of research work, STUVA and STUVAtec are also consulted for many object-related analyses and expert reports at home and abroad.
At our headquarters in Cologne there are three experimental halls covering a total area of approx. 2.000 m². Our research and experimental results are made available to the public in various ways:

  • The magazine "Tunnel", our official journal; 8 issues per year, bilingual (German/English)
  • A series of books "Research + Practice, Underground Transport and Building"
  • STUVA research reports
  • Internet
Every two years in autumn the STUVA conference takes place with various main topics from the fields of tunnelling and underground construction. The conferences are each attended by approximately 1300 tunnelling experts from more than 15 different countries. At an accompanying special exhibition, construction companies, consultants, machine suppliers, and component manufacturers present their products and services to a specialist public.

TÜV SÜD Rail

is a modern service company for the rail vehicle sector, offering a wide range of services to planners and manufacturers, public authorities and operators in the fields of assessment (testing, appraisal, certification) and engineering support.

Being a subsidiary company of TÜV SÜD AG, TÜV SÜD Rail is a guarantor of high quality and reliability under the sign of a strong brand.
The service activities of TÜV SÜD Rail are focused on the areas of railway automation (signalling technique, control engineering, generic automation systems), rail vehicles and infrastructure. By making use of synergies with the TÜV SÜD group and by various cooperations and participations, we are capable of accompanying new components or systems over their entire life cycle, from metropolitain railways and subsurface traffic systems up to and including high-velocity trains or the Transrapid.

Through our designated organisation Railcert B.V. (a common subsidiary of Holland Railconsult and TÜV SÜD Rail) as well as by the national partnership as Associated Partner of the Designated Organisation Interoperability (EBC) at the Federal Railway Authority (EBA), we are in a position to find competent solutions for all problems related to the safeguarding of interoperability of rail traffic systems according to the EU Directives.
An essential focus of activities is on our services in the field of fire protection of constructions and vehicles (systems evaluation, verification and accident, or damage analyses).
In this context, the problems of failure and emergency concepts will be given a priority in the future. For that purpose, the interrelationship of the subsystems of „Rail Vehicles“ (e.g. train traffic, passenger, freight and special traffic, and passengers/goods in road transit) – “Infrastructure“ (e.g. tunnels, bridges, route location, stations, works facilities) – „Operating Control Technique “ (e.g. signalling technique, service radio) – „Train Operation “ (local, regional, long-distance as well as high-velocity, and mixed traffic) will be assessed under the aspects of safety of persons and the protection of property.

The involvement in the „SOLIT“ Project is directed to the plausibility check of the test specification in relation to the interface of rail vehicles as well as at an assessment of the performance and evaluation of tests.
