Other Safety Systems Water mist systems are the only one possible applicable part of a tunnel safety system. Other essential components are e.g. ventilation, detection and evacuation means. Tactics and approach of fire fighters have to be emphasized as rescue services have to approach the fire as fast and safe as possible. In order to optimize the effect of all related safety systems, knowledge about interaction and suitable tuning is necessary. For example, a fire detection system must be able to detect the fire in a certain time and also locate the fire with adequate accuracy so that a fire suppression system can be controlled accordingly. In close cooperation with SOLIT partners, research work is focused on the following safety systems:
Various detection systems, based on different technologies, are tested under real conditions during the large scale fire tests. By using realistic fire scenarios, detection times and accuracy of localization of these systems are determined. Tests with fibre optic cables can be highlighted as they show a fast detection and good localisation of fires.
Not only during the fire tests, but also during set up and cleaning works, data is collected regarding concentration of dust and smoke particles in the air inside the tunnel. Especially during strong smoke production in case of fire, highest requirements are given to markings of escape ways. By means of different type of light – systems, visibility is checked also during activation of the water mist system.
Equally the tunnel has to be protected against temperatures above 1000°C that may occur during such large scale fire test. Also the influence of water mist on passive fire protection is assessed. |
